Selenium and Inositol for thyroid patients

During the last decades, a sharp increase in thyroid pathology took place in most countries. The reasons for that may be explained not only because we have a better ability to make precocious diagnosis but also because other factors may have contributed to that increase. In this view, genes play an important role, since an individual with a family history positive for thyroid problems has a significantly higher possibility of developing a pathology of the gland. Also, environment may contribute to the development of these pathologies such as radioactive accidents, pollution, and other iatrogenic illnesses, especially those correlated with autoimmunity.

Selenium one of  key elements in the regulation of the in thyroid function:
Acting as catalyst to convert the inactive T4 to the biologically active T3
Protecting thyroid cells from oxidative damage from hydrogen peroxide by forming selenoproteins
Even mild selenium deficiency may lead to the development and maintenance of autoimmune thyroid diseases.
Recommended Daily Allowance  for selenium is 55 mcg in the United States, with an upper limit of 400 mcg .
You could  to increase selenium intake by consumption of selenium-rich foods such as Brazil nuts, but it is important to realize that selenium content varies widely for foods grown in different soils.
Studies have been done to test the minimal dose of selenium for TPO antibody reduction, and that dose was established to be 200 mcg daily.
There is a wide geographical variation of availability of Se in food. The crucial factor that needs to be emphasised with regard to the health effects of Se is that whereas additional Se intake may benefit people with low status, those with adequate-to-high status might be affected adversely and should not take Se supplements.

The  beneficial effects obtained by selenomethionine treatment on patients affected by subclinical hypothyroidismare further improved by cotreatment with Myo-Inositol.
Inositol  acts as a second messenger regulating the activities of several hormones, such as insulin, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH).
Study  A total of 87 patients, 8 men and 79 women (mean age 42.30 ± 0.06 years), were included in our study; 86 were meeting the inclusion criteria as follows: age range 19–65, TSH levels between 3 and 6 mIU/L, elevated serum TPOAb and/or TgAb, and normal free thyroxine (fT4) and free triiodothyronine (fT3) levels.
Patients received tablets containing 600 mg myo-inositol plus 83 μg selenium in the form of L-selenomethionine orally for 6 months. Participants were asked to take the medication with water about 2 h before or after meal.
in subclinical hypothyroidism, patients with autoimmune thyroiditis, treated with Myo-Inositol and selenomethionine, experience a reduction of the increased TSH that selenomethionine supplementation alone was not able to promote.
